Role Summary/Purpose:


Our Corporate Public Relations team is focused on telling impactful stories around companywide initiatives and activities that build, enhance and protect Synchrony’s reputation.


The Assistant Vice President of Corporate External Communications will be responsible for communicating the Synchrony story, including how the company’s partnerships, consumer-facing programs, digital technology and unique culture are fueling the business. The role requires a communications professional who can shift quickly between strategy and execution while explaining complex initiatives through digestible stories to engage influencers. 


The AVP of Corporate External Communications will help develop and implement proactive communications strategies and editorial storytelling to drive Synchrony’s reputation.  The person will report to the Vice President of Corporate Communications and Public Relations in Synchrony’s Corporate Communications and Brand team and have a direct relationship with executive leaders including the CEO and C-Suite. The candidate will help to manage key agency partnerships.  The candidate should have experience in media relations and excellent written and verbal communications skills.  


This position is remote, where you have the option to work from home. On occasion we may request for you to commute to our nearest office for in-person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture events. Meeting with reporters in-person is also a requirement. To ensure the safety of our colleagues and communities, we require employees who come together in-person to be fully vaccinated. Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work with the executive team to craft meaningful messages that articulate the organization’s value to key audiences and activates it through content narratives, thought leadership, media pitches, social media, events and earned media

  • Serve as a key media contact and actively work to enhance and cultivate relationships with the media (including consumer, personal finance and lifestyle press, leading trade publications) and facilitate media interviews; serve as a media spokesperson

  • Raise the profile of the company and its executives by placing positive stories about Synchrony’s partnerships, consumer-facing programs, digital innovation and culture, including coverage of announcements and feature stories in trade publications and industry media

  • Manage multiple projects spanning news announcements, customer initiatives, and thought leadership campaigns

  • Create and manage storylines, content development, and help prepare senior executives with talking points, briefing documents, and FAQs

  • Research and project manage influential thought leadership opportunities, speaking events, editorial calendars and corporate awards submission for Synchrony leaders

  • Identify and capitalize on compelling proactive media opportunities that demonstrate Synchrony as a thought leader

  • Create and distribute press releases over the wire, coordinate with web team to publish content

  • Develop comprehensive media monitoring coverage and activity reports, develop and edit weekly news summaries, and maintain targeted media lists

  • Create infographics, video and other creative elements

  • Write, create, edit and/or perform other duties and special projects as assigned

  • Collaborate with corporate communications and brand team and extended communications stakeholders to drive high-impact campaigns for the company

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned



  • Bachelor's degree. In lieu of a degree, 9 years of experience in public relations including corporate communications

  • 6+ years of experience working in media relations or a public relations agency

  • 5+ years of experience working with media and industry contacts that can be leveraged to execute external communications programs

  • Proven experience in external storytelling, excellent communications (written and verbal) and editing skills, with demonstrated ability to create concise, well-written narratives and strong message positioning for various communications channels and audiences

  • Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in a matrix environment, including developing strategies, coordinating reviews and approvals and working with agencies and budgets

  • Attention to detail to deliver accurate, high-quality work

  • Successful track record of positively influencing and collaborating across business groups, functions (including legal and IR), organization levels and virtual teams to drive results

  • Complete tasks quickly with little guidance and respond with appropriate urgency to fast-moving situations

  • Familiar with the editorial and media landscape and industry trends. Ability to develop stories and content to connect our subject matter experts with media and influencers.


Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles.  Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles.  Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post.  All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).

The salary range for this position is 75,000.00 - 150,000.00 USD Annual


Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA and Metro NY and some positions are bonus eligible.
