The Communication Manager reports to the Director, Organizational Effectiveness & Communication and has shared responsibility for three websites: the Facilities public website, the InsiderFacilities website, and the Construction at Princeton website. The primary focus of this role is to create a comprehensive content strategy that engages all audiences by presenting creative stories gathered from employees and departments, about our projects, our ongoing campus expansion, our accomplishments, our events and news to keep Facilities informed.


The Communication Manager works in collaboration with Manager Communication & Business Projects and the Project Communication Manager to educate, inform and engage internal and external populations.


The Facilities organization consists of approximately 800 staff that plan, design, construct, maintain and care for the campus buildings and grounds. Facilities is also responsible for the University's Sustainability Plan and Real Estate Development. Facilities is comprised of seven departments: University Architect, Capital Projects, Finance and Administrative Services, Organizational Effectiveness & Communications, Operations, Engineering & Campus Energy, and Sustainability. The division runs on an operating budget of approximately $125 million.




  • Understand the functionality of each Facilities' departments and identify appropriate communication stories and content to share with each organization.
  • Create a unified content strategy that engages all audiences; and leverage our three websites and Facilities presentations to keep Facilities informed.
  • Attend departmental meetings and connect with department assistants to create stories that target individual department’s staff using a creative and fresh perspective to our communications channels.
  • Create and write Facilities stories and employee’s profile pieces, news articles, events, new hires, accomplishments, milestones, etc.
  • Create content for InsideFacilities website, the Facilities public website, and the Construction at Princeton
  • Create and manage a content calendar to engage and align Facilities’ departments and staff strategically and proactively.
  • Produce creative and engaging visual presentations and media content including slide images for Facilities monitors and Town Hall presentations for the VP.
  • Review and edit media content requests from external resources.
  • Publish an engaging monthly newsletter for staff, gather story ideas from campus constituencies and coworkers, create and write stories.
  • Partner with freelance photographers and videographers to enhance stories online.
  • Track and analyze website and newsletter readership using Google Analytics and other tools. Adjust content and recommend communication strategies based on results.

Communications Resources

  • Maintain Facilities-wide SharePoint homepage that includes outages, announcements, and policy documents.
  • Manage Facilities photo archives and update with current events, staff, pre, current, and post construction.

Liaison With University Communications and Facilities Communication Managers

  • Work with the University's Office of Communications to align Facilities communication with the University's goals.
  • Ensure the continuity of Facilities communications with the principles of the University's graphic identity system.
  • Cultivate relationships with colleagues at all levels and departments inside and outside of Facilities.
  • Build partnerships with stakeholders to share communication stories across the University and enhance/create a visual branding for our content.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related professional field, i.e., communication, writing, public relations, or related/equivalent experience.
  • Three - five years communications management experience, including collaboration, design layout, and production.
  • Demonstration of written and oral communication skills, storytelling, and executive presence.
  • Demonstrated use of judgment and diplomacy within departments and outside.
  • Proficiency with computer programs/software platforms used in communications activities including PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, Adobe suite, and Canva.
  • Able to work as a team player, and independently in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Able to learn new things and adapt to organizational changes.
  • Experience in digital asset management, organization, storage, and recovery.
  • Experience with digital analytics, such as Google Analytics.
  • Demonstration of project management skills, organization, and planning to meet tight deadlines.


  • Video content creation.
  • Proficiency with Drupal, Photoshop, photo, and video management and editing tools.
  • Demonstrated experience working within institutional or academic/campus community, consensus-driven environments reporting to Boards, cabinet members, Deans, department Chairs, etc.
