The Center for the Art of Translation champions literary translation. We are dedicated to finding dazzling new, overlooked, and underrepresented voices, brought into English by the best translators, and to celebrating the art of translation. Our publications, events, and educational programming enrich the library of vital literary works, nurture and promote the work of translators, build audiences for literature in translation, and honor the incredible linguistic and cultural diversity of our schools and our world.
The Center for the Art of Translation (CAT) seeks a Communications Assistant (CA). The CA promotes the Center’s publishing, events, and educational programs, spotlights our collaborators and colleagues, supports fundraising efforts, and helps build our community of translators, readers, writers, educators, students, and donors. The Center advocates for international writing, translators and the art of translation, BIPOC writers and writing, and underrepresented voices everywhere. The CA will oversee the Center’s email newsletters and social media streams, maintaining consistent messaging, style, and visual appeal. The CA proactively collaborates with CAT staff, writers, translators, educators, outside organizations, and volunteers.
The ideal applicant is a meticulous manager of information, a writer who can sum up event details with panache while simultaneously thinking through potential audiences and developing timelines for dissemination. We are seeking a creative and strategic observer who can identify and draw out engaging stories from our community. Excellent project management and organizational skills are crucial to this position, as are adaptability, open-mindedness, and an affinity for building and implementing effective processes and systems. Although literary expertise and foreign language proficiency are not requisite skills nor duties of this position, a strong interest in literature in translation and/or a second language would be beneficial. - Develop email newsletters, blog posts, and visual communications that amplify Center programs and events, cultivate the literary translation community, and respond to timely issues in the field
- Manage social media streams; develop and implement social media initiatives that spotlight publications, events, and educational activities; maintain social media style guides
- Coordinate with the Public Programs Director to develop and execute strategies for event promotion
- Advocate for literature in translation, especially for the work of translators, writers of color, women writers, and underrepresented voices; build and maintain relationships with these groups and their work; support strategies and partnerships to raise their profiles in our field
- Craft materials in support of fundraising, including emails, donor letters, donor newsletters, and surveys; assist with maintaining current contact information for donors, customers, contributors, etc., in CAT’s CRM
- 3-5 years marketing communications and/or writing experience
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Superior project management skills and experience juggling shifting priorities and deadlines
- Proven track record of producing content for multiple platforms on a daily basis
- Strong organizational sense with a sharp eye for detail
- Energetic, imaginative, collaborative, adaptable, willing to learn
- Familiarity with social media scheduling and/or project management systems like Buffer and Asana
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Dropbox, etc.
- Familiarity with WordPress, the Chicago Manual of Style, and contemporary literature
- Commitment to and passion for the Center’s mission
JOB LOCATION & REQUIREMENTS
This is a hybrid position based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Applicants can expect a combination of in-office and remote work.
SALARY & BENEFITS
The salary for this position is $55,000 annually. The Center offers a robust benefits package that includes generous vacation, flexible work schedules, the option of joining a health and dental plan, a flexible spending account, and a retirement plan with 5% matching. This is a full-time, nonexempt position based in San Francisco.
