The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (DDCF) seeks a talented, experienced and enterprising Communications Officer with a collaborative mindset and a passion for public interest communications to contribute to its Communications Department. The right candidate will require little editing to their own writing and have proven experience in crafting communications strategies, developing messaging, editing the work of others, executing a wide spectrum of communications tactics and serving as the primary manager of significant communications projects. With guidance from the Communications Director, the Communications Officer will work autonomously with contractors, the Communications Associate, grantees, the office of the president and other staff across the foundation to design and deploy multi-tactic strategic communications campaigns that advance programmatic and institutional goals. In the process, this person will gain in-depth understanding of the foundations’ work as a whole and the opportunity to help expand—and shape the future of—the foundation’s communications practice.

  • Lead the management of, and serve as the primary day-to-day contact for, a variety of multi-tactic communications campaigns, creating workflows in project management platforms and monitoring progress, with appropriate follow-up, to ensure contractors, partners and internal contributors execute their deliverables and feedback on deadline.
  • Help develop, shape and execute ambitious communications campaigns.
  • Oversee the monthly foundation e-newsletter as well as the Grantee Spotlight section of the foundation’s website – functioning as the assigning editor, top editor and content strategist for both, and, as the occasional need arises, conducting interviews and writing content.  
  • Research, cultivate and maintain relationships with media contacts; draft tailored pitches; oversee the development of media lists for press release distributions; and follow up with reporters to arrange interviews and offer supports.
  • Lead the strategic development of social media and communications kits for grantees and partners, and collaborate with foundation staff, grantees and partners to construct plans for and execution of live tweeting of foundation events.
  • Ensure proper grammatical construction, structural coherence, conceptual clarity and adherence to the foundation’s editorial style guide in foundation communications. 


  • A Bachelor’s degree (ideally in a relevant field of study), with at least seven years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism or a mix of these or related fields.
  • Organized and adaptable, with demonstrated experience in effectively and proactively managing many significant projects and priorities simultaneously, excellent attention to detail, and strong follow-up skills.
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills; ability to craft engaging, strategic narratives and messaging; and familiarity with style guides, such as AP Stylebook or The Chicago Manual of Style, among others.
  • Strong computer skills and comfort with technology; experience using content management systems, project management platforms, and press/social media monitoring and distribution tools a plus.
  • Knowledge of social media trends and strategies as well as experience implementing them in social media content and campaigns preferred.
  • An abundant set of established relationships with media contacts and/or agencies a plus.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and an interest in messaging and implicit bias research as well as narrative change and asset-based communications theories.  
  • A creative and strategic thinker, with the maturity and strong judgment to solve problems, make decisions independently, and know when to escalate issues or request input from department leadership.
  • A self-motivated team player, who works cooperatively and positively with other employees.
  • A professional, collegial demeanor with a genial sense of humor desired.
  • A marked interest in nonprofits, philanthropy and/or the issue areas the foundation supports.
