Overview of Team/ Function:
The News Writer works closely with members of the Corporate Communications team to educate different audiences about the Bank’s work, advance its reputation for public service, and keep employees informed and engaged. You will participate in editorial planning and write and edit content for the Bank’s digital channels.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • You will support the Bank’s efforts in public relations, executive communications, and organizational communications by turning complex topics into informative and engaging news stories and features for internal and external audiences.

  • Externally, the content you produce drives traffic to bostonfed.org and social channels and encourages interest in Boston Fed research and initiatives. Internally, the News Writer develops content to inform staff about important Bank initiatives and writes human-interest features that promote understanding and a sense of community.

  • You will post articles on internal and external web channels.

  • The News Writer is continuously generating story ideas. This means you must be experienced at establishing relationships (i.e. developing sources) and gathering and reporting information in a timely fashion. You are in tune with what’s happening across Bank departments. You have advanced interviewing and time management skills and the proven ability to write quickly and accurately. Daily newsroom experience is preferred.

  • You can produce compelling copy while toggling between different types of assignments and advancing multiple stories simultaneously. You could work on a news article about complex research one moment and an organizational communication the next. You always adhere to deadlines and editorial planning priorities.

  • You will edit internal and external copy with meticulous attention to detail. You will quickly spot mistakes in grammar, spelling, and punctuation. You will look for holes in stories and suggest ways to fill them.

  • You are a team player, frequently consulting and collaborating with colleagues to develop content to support understanding and awareness. You are ready to contribute suggestions in team and individual settings, and you are open to guidance as you go.

  • You have a thorough and expanding knowledge of Associated Press style.


The News Writer reports to the Senior Writer and Editor and works closely with all members of the Corporate Communications department. You will not supervise others, but you are comfortable leading projects and processes.


  • Bachelor's degree required, ideally in communications, journalism, or English, along with 3 or more years of related job experience. Experience writing about financial services a plus.

  • Ability to skillfully tailor communications for different audiences

  • Meticulousness with the details and experience fielding a steady flow of deliverables

  • Experience editing for both copy and content

  • Demonstrated journalistic instincts and newsgathering experience (daily newsroom experience preferred)

  • Ability to connect with all levels of an organization

  • Ability to handle the demands of sensitive and sometimes urgent communications in a complex organization

  • Experience with the Microsoft applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

  • Familiarity with web content management platforms
