How You’ll Contribute

The Communications Division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society (NGS), while maintaining our place as one of the world’s most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. The Division’s creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, marketing, creative and media for the National Geographic Society and amplify this content on our own channels, across National Geographic Partners (NGP) and through outside partners and earned media. The Division is composed of six integrated departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand, Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial.

The Manager, Internal Communications is part of the Strategic Communications team and supports NGS by developing comprehensive change management strategies around our major initiatives, including implementation of the Society’s strategic plan (NG Next), our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and innovative workplace strategies. The Manager, Internal Communications reports to the Senior Manager, Internal Communications and will work closely with the Specialist, Internal Communications.

 

Your Impact

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive change management strategies for the Society’s major initiatives, including implementation of the NGS strategic plan (NG Next), our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, and innovative workplace strategy. Develop the internal messaging related to change management activities and execute on a variety of tactics (including email communication, Slack messages, events, roadshows and surveys) to ensure staff awareness, understanding and support. (40%)
  • Create and execute internal communications strategies for major NGS announcements, priorities and initiatives, such as the organization’s progress toward the NG Next strategic plan, information security, performance review process, as well as communications plans for major NGS events, such as the annual Explorers Festival. (30%)
  • Develop and execute communication plans to disseminate updates and initiatives from the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council and the strategic plan. (20%)
  • Advise on change management strategies for other NGS constituencies, including Explorers, donors and partners. (10%)

 

What You’ll Bring

Education

Bachelor’s degree preferred

Minimum Years of Experience   

5+ years of internal communications, corporate communications and/or change management experience

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a variety of internal constituents.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and exercise good professional judgement.
  • Ability to work some late nights and weekends.
  • Strong project management and prioritization skills.
  • Event management skills.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with change management communications and DEI communications a plus.
