About the position: Director, Communications

The Director, Communications is a new role, serving the needs of both FrameWorks and its partners.
We recently completed an impact assessment and outlined a vision with action plans and next steps to get there. We’re seeking a seasoned, entrepreneurial communications professional who can help us move forward and bring the vision to life.
Specifically, the Director, Communications will develop a two-to-three year communications and marketing plan by the end of 2021, using the strategic framework from our impact assessment as a guide. The Director will also lead and carry out the execution of that plan, which will include refreshing the story FrameWorks wants to tell its audiences through its various online and offline channels. As time permits, the Director may also play a role in refining the messaging, narrative, and strategic support we offer to help our partners in the field build power around solutions to create a more equitable, just, and healthy democratic society. 
The ideal candidate will:
  • Have strong applied communications skills and demonstrated experience designing and supporting communications programs or campaigns
  • Have experience working with partners and successfully building and managing those relationships
  • Be intellectually curious, creative, innovative, insightful, and informed about contemporary movements and substantive policy issues
  • Be committed to principles of inclusion and advancing equity.
This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C.
Key responsibilities
  • Develop a two-to-three-year communications and marketing plan for FrameWorks
  • Lead, innovate, and execute FrameWorks’ communications and marketing efforts, which will likely include:
    • Overseeing any additional communications staff who may be hired and an internal communications and marketing committee
    • Planning and executing marketing- or partnership-building events
    • Planning and executing on press outreach, social media production, and partner outreach
    • Building and supporting a FrameWorks brand consistent with our vision for working in service of progressive movements and issues
  • Work with research colleagues to ensure that research products are useful and accessible to partners in the field
  • Innovate new strategies and approaches to shift public discourse, influence culture, advance social norms, and seed change through framing
  • Develop a thorough working knowledge of Strategic Frame Analysis®

Skills needed
  • Commitment to FrameWorks’ mission as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to absorb, shape, and interpret FrameWorks’ research and recommendations
  • Ability to work with staff and partners to translate FrameWorks’ research and recommendations into movement-building, narrative, storytelling, or communications strategies
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary, partner-oriented team
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills; ability to thrive in a fast-paced organization and get things done; strategic and practical judgment to move work forward; flexibility and ability to adapt to changing needs
Experience required
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Eight to ten years combined education and professional experience in progressive communications or marketing with a nonprofit social change organization or movement, preferably working in the fields of economic justice, health equity or children and families
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is a major plus: media relations, narrative-based initiatives, campaign development or execution, digital strategy, or developing compelling products or content 
  • Expertise in communicating issues related to racial equity and a demonstrated ability to integrate principles of equity, justice, and inclusion into daily work
  • Rapid response experience, either in an earned or digital media environment
  • Strong demonstrated success in leading teams and managing relationships with partners, coalition members, or clients in a nonprofit, campaign, or movement setting
  • Experience working collaboratively on a diverse team

Salary: $125,000, depending on experience
