About the Organization

Heal the Bay is an environmental nonprofit dedicated to making our coastal waters and watersheds safe, healthy and clean. To fulfill our mission, we use science, education, community action and advocacy. We educate the Southern California about ocean conservation, the causes and impacts of water pollution, the need for a resilient water supply, and what we can all do to make a difference. We directly engage over 150,000 people annually through our Heal the Bay Aquarium, beach cleanups, and community outreach programs.

About the Role

Heal the Bay is looking for a super motivated, digitally savvy communications professional who loves storytelling as much as our mission. Using fresh thinking, clever execution and the latest digital tools, you will mobilize diverse communities in Greater LA to protect our coastal waters and watersheds. You will hold day-to-day responsibility for creative campaigns and initiatives across our websites, apps, social media, email, direct mail, and media that drive fundraising, spur advocacy, boost volunteer sign-ups and increase visits to Heal the Bay Aquarium at the Santa Monica Pier. This position reports to the Communications and Marketing Senior Director.

Expectations & Responsibilities

  • Create and manage the organization’s communications calendar
  • Manage the development, distribution, promotion and optimization of all print and digital communications and marketing collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, website, petitions, social media, blog, email marketing, direct mail and digital appeals, press releases, media kits, activist toolkits, videos, advertisements, retail product information, event promotion and action alerts
  • Be the primary author and editor of Heal the Bay’s website content (WordPress) and edit in HTML
  • Work proactively in a cross-functional capacity to plan communications strategies and generate content with educators, scientists, policy experts, community leaders, coalitions and sponsors
  • Extensive copywriting, proofreading and editing in AP Style
  • Implement compelling advocacy and fundraising initiatives with engagement and revenue goals
  • Oversee content, community management and analytics for campaigns on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn,etc.)
  • Manage social media monitoring and scheduling tools (Hootsuite, Later)
  • Utilize Salesforce as the primary CRM tool for all subscriber, donor, volunteer, event, and advocacy communications
  • Mine data and opportunities from Shopify and Classy for list building, reporting and audience targeting
  • Create graphics, flyers and presentations in Canva
  • Monitor Google Analytics for Heal the Bay and Beach Report Card trends and user information
  • Use a variety of systems and tools to create and manage content (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Acrobat, Google Drive, Google Docs, Photoshop, Illustrator, iMovie and Flickr)
  • Manage organization’s digital assets on internal and external drives: photos, videos, files, and creative collateral
  • Provide staff training and oversee email templates and lists on email marketing platform (Emma)
  • Cultivate and maintain pro bono and “low bono” relationships with creative partners, creators, artists, photographers, videographers, developers and influencers
  • Conduct outreach to potential partners and sponsors for campaigns and procure leads for business development on an ongoing basis
  • Prepare monthly reports to track progress toward annual goals
  • Recruit and manage communications interns and volunteers

Preferred Experience & Skills

  • Minimum BA/BS degree in communications or equivalent practical experience
  • Passionate for storytelling through multiple media types, both visual, written, auditory and experiential
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and a scrupulous attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to deadlines
  • Commitment to collaborative problem-solving with a positive attitude and generous spirit
  • Tenacity, humor and confidence when faced with challenging projects
  • Superb project management skills to get things done
  • Proven ability to set and meet measurable goals
  • Experience in Mac systems
  • Passionate about telling multicultural stories and engaging diverse communities
  • Appreciation for the environment and clean water
  • Enjoys interpreting complex, scientific information for audiences to digest easily
  • Knowledge of digital accessibility and search engine optimization effective practices
  • Understanding of the communications landscape and developments in new media, tech, global policy and related industries
  • Fluency in Spanish

This is a non-exempt, full-time position, hiring range starts at $28.84/hour or $60,000 annual equivalent (based on experience) with appropriate state and federal taxes withheld.


Dental, health insurance, and vacation benefits are included as part of employment. In accordance with California Labor Law, employee will be eligible to receive up to 72 hours of paid sick leave per calendar year, after completing 90 days of employment. All Heal the Bay recognized Holidays will be compensated in accordance to time worked.


Position start day ASAP.

Full-time, 40 hours per week. Must be available for some weekends, evenings. Due to COVID-19, we are currently working remotely, but will transition back to working from our Santa Monica office with some flexibility, once it is safe to do so. Heal the Bay offers a dynamic work environment with highly motivated staff and volunteers. Candidates must currently live in Los Angeles County, California to be considered for this role.
