Princeton University cultivates an ethos of sustainability on campus, in service to the world. This sustainability communications and outreach role reports to the Director of the Office of Sustainability and is responsible for university-wide communications and engagement toward achieving campus Sustainability Action Plan objectives.

The Communications and Engagement Manager is responsible for developing and executing a disciplined communications strategy to support community-building around and engagement in sustainability actions, in collaboration with other campus communicators and programs. Reflecting both institutional and Office priorities, the manager will elevate and support the social and environmental justice dimensions of this work through both communications and engagement programming. Effective collaboration within the Office team, and with other campus communicators, is essential.

  • Serve as a creative communications strategist, leveraging emerging communications trends, research, and techniques to connect to key audiences and stakeholders; support the application of behavioral-science in campaigns.
  • Serve as the lead for campus sustainability communications; develop and maintain communications partnerships to elevate the University's scales-of-impact sustainability vision; develop communications plans and strategies.
  • Assure exceptional integrity, quality and accuracy in communications; deliver regular impact assessments; curate messaging across web, video, social media, live data platforms, dedicated physical spaces and displays, and other resources.
  • Develop annual updates for leadership groups, including Trustees.
  • Engage locally, regionally, and nationally with peers to reinforce and enhance sustainability messaging on behalf of the University
  • Manage a team of paid student communications employees and a part-time professional videographer to advance campus- and community-facing engagement and storytelling.
  • Write job descriptions, recruit applicants, oversee hiring, and perform reviews.
  • Set clear expectations, guiding project development and execution, and leverage Office and University resources to mentor students as they build their communications skills.
  • Train teams in Office principles communications guidelines and best practices.
  • Further develop and integrate a diverse group of Staff Ambassadors as everyday advocates and communicators across campus.
  • Hire, supervise and manage student workers to support engagement programming, including zero waste and energy conservation initiatives; supervise a Student Engagement Project Assistant to assist in coordinating engagement efforts across student organizations.
  • Further develop visual identity and messaging at the new EcoLounge in the Frist Campus Center, and at the Office location.
  • Review student-generated communications or engagement proposals to the Office-managed High Meadows Foundation Sustainability Fund.
  • Selected candidates will be ask to provide portfolio of their work

  • Bachelor's degree and seven or more years of strongly related experience.
  • Demonstrated multimedia communications skills in a sustainability-related field.
  • Proven engagement and outreach experience working among diverse audiences, including students.
  • Proven administrative, planning, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage complex projects efficiently, collaboratively, and with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with the environmental justice dimensions of sustainability work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and desktop publishing software.
  • Proven experience managing social media, print, website, and other multimedia platforms. Strong orientation toward teamwork, flexibility, and collaboration in a highly motivated and rapidly-evolving environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience leveraging local and national multi-media outlets.
  • Experience applying the principles of behavioral science.
