The Recount is a fast-growing news start-up covering politics, business, technology, and culture. Founded in 2019 by media industry veterans and longtime collaborators John Battelle and John Heilemann, the company was created to reinvent video journalism for the platforms reshaping the news business: digital, mobile, social, and streaming. To cut through the noise and stale narratives of so much broadcast and cable coverage, never wasting viewers’ time or insulting their intelligence, driving dialogue instead of mindless division—all the while maintaining the highest traditional editorial standards. Starting out with a focus on politics, The Recount has already established itself as a wide-reaching and influential news brand on Twitter and other social sites, as well as launching a suite of successful podcasts. Now we're training our sights on the corridors of power from Silicon Valley to Wall Street to Hollywood and beyond, while expanding aggressively into streaming and other new formats.

About the Role
Recount Media is looking for an (S)VP, Audience and Product Development to report directly to the CEO. We’re looking for a strategic, data-driven, creative leader to develop, set, and own strategies that drive a high-value and diverse audience to all of The Recount’s digital platforms, including but not limited to digital franchises, social media, apps, email, audio, and more. You will build out innovative ways to reach our growing audience at scale, with an emphasis on product, content, and marketing, while managing a team that handles audience development, product management, and analytics. You will partner closely with editorial, sales, marketing and product to connect their work to our audiences everywhere, and manage multiple work streams and intra- and interdepartmental team communication.
This is a dynamic executive role in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is a self-starter, data-driven, empathetic and an innovative problem-solver who is excited by the opportunity to spearhead a critical and highly collaborative function at Recount Media. A willingness to “do the work” as an individual contributor is just as important as the ability to lead a team. 

This position reports to the CEO/President and based in New York City.


  • ​​​10-12 years of digital media experience with a major media company or OTT platform
  • At least 3 years of management and product marketing/management experience
  • Deep experience using BI tools (Google Analytics, Facebook Insights, ChartBeat, YouTube Analytics, Looker, etc.) and SEO tools 
  • Experience growing a digital platform and successfully building and leveraging audience data to do so
  • Comfortable providing feedback to editorial and management teams Solid understanding of both traditional and social marketing as well as understanding the talent landscape, both digital and linear
  • Experience building an engaged audience on Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Email, O&O, TikTok and other distribution platforms 
  • Previous expertise successfully growing audiences, developing and executing marketing campaigns and working with branded content
  • Well versed in SEO and content marketing strategy
  • Deep understanding of audience behavior, engagement strategies, and platform best practices
  • Deep understanding of native content on a platform-by-platform basis
  • Strong knowledge of campaign lifecycle management, ad sales process, trafficking, QA, performance analytics/reporting
  • Ability to clearly articulate and present initiatives to creative and technical teams alike and build rapport with key stakeholders
  • Cross-functional project management – working with many teams across the company simultaneously and making everyone is on the same page

Experience and Qualifications

  • Metrics-driven and experimental in the approach to problem solving, with exceptional analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Both a leader and a doer. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively across all levels (written and verbal); ability to translate ideas, notes and reporting to a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience in amplifying email marketing campaigns
  • Solution-oriented and extremely organized approach to work 
  • Ability to multitask and work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Entrepreneurial spirit looking for ways to create and improve processes and make improvements to the existing team
