Overview


The Communications Division uses creative and strategic tools to further the mission of the National Geographic Society (NGS), while maintaining our place as one of the world’s most trusted non-profit organizations and global brands. The team’s creative minds develop and execute mission-driven, on-brand and strategic communications, marketing, creative and impact media for the NGS and amplify this content on our own channels, across National Geographic Partners (NGP) and through outside partners and earned media. The team is composed of six integrated departments: Engagement and Marketing Strategy, Brand, Creative, Strategic Communications, Executive Communications, and Content and Editorial.

The Manager, Explorer Communications is responsible for overseeing and executing a stakeholder communication and engagement strategy for the National Geographic Society’s global community of National Geographic Explorers — exceptional individuals in their fields who receive funding and support from the Society to illuminate and protect our world through their work in science, exploration, education, and storytelling. Additionally, the Manager, Explorer Communications will identify and coordinate visibility opportunities for Explorers, including media coverage and speaking engagements.This position will report to the Director, PR & Media Relations.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Create and execute communications strategies to share major organization announcements, initiatives, and other offerings with the Society’s global community of National Geographic Explorers in partnership with the Communications Division and the Explorer Engagement team. (35%)

  • Proactively identify opportunities to elevate Explorers, in alignment with the Society’s integrated communications and marketing plan. Conduct media outreach to amplify the NGS-funded work of Explorers and help to secure and manage speaking opportunities for Explorers on global stages (both virtual and in-person). (35%)

  • Lead the development of and provide quality assurance on a variety of tactics, including newsletters, letters from the Chief Explorer Engagement Officer, website language, fact sheets/FAQs, and training courses. (20%)

  • Monitor and advise the Explorer community National Geographic brand standards. (10%)

 

What You’ll Bring

Education

Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism or related fields

 

Minimum Years of Experience

5+ years public relations and/or stakeholder engagement

 

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong news judgment and media relations skills

  • Strong communication skills and an understanding of what should be communicated to different audiences.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

  • Ability to develop/coordinate the production of multimedia content.

  • The ability to maintain high-quality work while meeting tight deadlines.

  • Organized and detail-oriented.

  • A quick and motivated learner with enthusiasm for the National Geographic Society’s mission.

  • A proactive self-starter and creative problem solver.

  • Knowledge of AP Stylebook, SalesForce, and Marketing Cloud.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with stakeholder engagement and DEI communications is a plus

Job Designation

 

Hybrid - This position has been designated Hybrid, meaning your position will be performed from NGS Base Camp three fixed days a week (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) and can be performed remotely for two fixed days a week (Monday and Friday).
