Job Summary
The Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) provides the strategic vision/leading edge thinking and executes the direction, leadership and management of external and internal DE&I programs with a focus on economic opportunity, workforce development and supplier diversity.  The Senior Director is also responsible for developing and fostering the integration of best DE&I practices and culture throughout the API organization.

The Senior Director is a forward-thinking position that supports API’s advocacy efforts to recruit, engage and mobilize non-traditional strategic partners, including those in the African American, Hispanic, Asian American, and Native American communities to drive API’s vision for a more inclusive and equitable future.  API partners with intentional, proactive problem-solvers who help tackle the world’s greatest energy challenges, and focus on creating a better tomorrow, built on the principles of mutual respect and community. The position is responsible for advancing goals through developing and maintaining strong and effective relationships with member companies, relevant partner organizations and internal staff in support of API’s mission.

  • Oversees DE&I strategy and engagement with member working group and task forces, including programing and educational initiatives.
  • Develops and expands relationships with partner and prospective organizations, including those in the African American, Asian American, Hispanic, and Native American communities in support of API objectives.
  • Manages day to day activities in support of API’s Energy Action Alliance (EAA).
  • Plans, organizes and manages sponsorship deliverables for support from partner organizations to ensure alignment with API policy and education goals.
  • Serves as industry spokesperson, make presentations at industry conferences and work in collaboration with other API staff in support of API’s strategic DE&I objectives.
  • Facilitates and shares research and best practices on emergent issues of DEI and provides strategic guidance to enhance DEI goals and cultural competency.
  • Manages educational outreach to partner organizations highlighting opportunities for research, program support and energy policy collaboration/awareness.
  • Collaborates with staff to facilitate trust-building, relationship-building, cultural competency and organizational awareness as it relates to DEI.
  • Collaborates with other API departments to effectively coordinate strategic outreach and ensure targeted and substantive engagement.
  • Leads API’s DE&I integration team as well as co-chair to API’s Diversity Advisory Council to advance API’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
  • Works closely with Human Resources to ensure consistency in all HR policies, procedures and hiring practices in relation to DE&I.
  • Manages consultants as appropriate supporting API non-traditional outreach efforts.

Key Relationships
This position reports to the COO and will assist with the development, implementation, coordination and evaluation of integrated campaigns, programs and education in support of API’s strategic DE&I goals.  Incumbent will work closely with federal government relations, external mobilization, Global Industry Services and communications teams, as well all API teams from an internal DE&I perspective. Incumbent will also work closely with the Vice President and CHRO on API’s internal DEI program and initiatives.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Communications or related fields; Master’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of 12+ years of experience preferred in advocacy including minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role, with at least 3 years in a strategic or operational DEI position
  • Experience leading transformational or organizational change
  • Experience working in a members-based organization such as an association
  • Strong communicator and leader with interpersonal skills/experience working with diverse audiences
  • Understanding of oil and natural gas industry issues, and knowledge of state and federal legislative process
  • Ability to develop and implement specific, measurable, actionable, replicable and time bound action plans
  • Demonstrated a proven ability in developing and supporting continuous improvement principles utilizing a systemic approach and data for decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects and manage competing priorities
  • Excellent relationship-building skills
  • Exceptional written and oral communications ability  
  • Entrepreneurial problem solver – identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner and gathers and analyzes information skillfully
  • Team oriented and customer-service focused with the ability to interact with internal staff, executives and stakeholders
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite products (Excel, Word, Outlook, Access) or similar type of products in a Windows environment
