AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group​ includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels.  It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.


The Communications Manager engages in the implementation of communications strategies tailored for target audiences over multi-channel platforms. Measures communication campaign effectiveness for return-on-investment. The Communications Manager leads the design of communications campaigns that raise brand awareness, informs, educates, and influences internal and external audiences. Ensures content aligns with the enterprise brand strategy and brand architecture. Collaborates with management to identify opportunities to streamline communication processes and develop new procedures that support the business unit/department.


  • Manages the development of communications strategies tailored for target audiences over multi-channel platforms, and leads the execution of those efforts to inform, educate, and influence both internal and external audiences.
  • Develops and distributes communications collateral, including items such as audio/video content, social media, press materials, digital content, AARP owned channels, etc. Ensures messaging and approach aligns with the organization’s strategic objectives and enterprise brand strategy.
  • Establishes strategic media partnerships and leverages internal/external resources to raise the visibility of the organization with members, the public and key influencers.
  • Monitors and measures the effectiveness of communications strategies and tactics, making adjustments as needed and using findings to inform, refine and further strengthen future efforts.
  • Recruits, trains, develops, and deploys volunteers in accordance with organizational goals, aligning volunteers’ interests with organizational priorities, supporting volunteer needs and designing opportunities to maximize volunteer engagement in pursuit of the organization's goals..
  • Develops, distributes, and manages internal communications content and tools..


  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism or a related discipline and a minimum of 5 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of media relations, communications, and public relations.
  • Must be able to strategically plan for and manage delivery of every viable opportunity to tell the AARP Story in California.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Travel inside the state required at least 10% of work time.
  • Moderate noise enivornment. 

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
