Job Description

Our Corporate Home Office has an exciting opportunity to become a Manager, Cultural and Community Communications. As a Manager of Cultural Communications for McDonald's USA, you will help create and manage the perceptions of one of the most recognized brands.


Reporting to the Director of Cultural and Community Communications, you will be responsible for developing and leading communications strategies to support the McDonald's (McD) U.S. business and brand across critical multicultural audience segments (Asian, Black and Hispanic) for food and menu news, brand activations and campaigns, critical business drivers and other cultural engagement programs.

In this role, you will manage three supervisors and dedicatedly counsel business partners on and craft communications programs that effectively reach and engage defined audiences (e.g., media, consumers, influencers, third party organizations, etc.) with McD's brand engagement efforts, drive awareness & sales, and enhance & improve overall brand image and advocacy, including but not limited to retail campaigns, segment-specific education and passion-point activations and promotional partnerships.

Responsibilities

In addition to following McDonald’s policies and procedures, your principal accountabilities will include, but are not restricted to:


Communications Strategy & Counsel

  • Aligns communications and PR strategy with (1) supported U.S. Business departments such as Marketing, Digital/Social, Menu Innovation and within McDonald's Corporate Reputation Team, and (2) other Communication departmental areas (e.g., media relations, internal/system, field communications, public affairs, and government relations) as well as key franchisee partners.
  • Crafts, develops and executes PR strategies for defined focus areas including consumer engagements and promotions, food & menu categories, digital accelerators and reputation initiatives with Asian-American, Black and Latino consumers.
  • Counsels partners on effective methods to reach and then engage key external audiences (e.g., influencers, media and consumers) with McDonald's brand stories and messages.
  • Uses data and key multicultural insights to align & inform strategy and tactics.
  • Gathers, analyzes and incorporates appropriate brand and industry standard methodologies to ensure that strategy and programs resonate with and motivate multicultural consumers.
  • Identifies and applies new, dynamic & creative ways to reach & engage external audiences through content and other new online and offline approaches.
  • Continuously seeks ongoing development opportunities to strengthen individual leadership and counsel.
  • Measures and reports on success of communications and PR strategy for ownership programs. 
  • Write and edit press releases, media statements and other relevant communications materials.
  • Use data and customer insights to back up thinking and decisions.

Relationship Building

  • Develops and maintains relationships with key partners across the U.S. Business, especially with those departments and individuals that the Communications team partners with including franchisees, field & national marketing and communications and national and local PR agencies.
  • Strives to demonstrate teamwork within the Communications team as a whole, i.e. supporting team members, providing coaching/mentoring, identifying ongoing opportunities to contribute to cross-functional initiatives.
  • Represents Communications both internally within the McD's system and externally at industry and business functions, events, etc. Brings back knowledge and new information to the team and department in order to further collective skills development, leadership.

Resource Management/Administration

  • Develops and manages all resources to support and guide the ownership communications & PR programs (e.g., budget, agency support, team support, etc.).
  • Ensures that all programs are kept within established budgets.
  • Provides Director with regular updates on resource management (e.g., quarterly budget updates/projections, agency support, etc.).
  • Complete all routine administrative functions (e.g., expense reports, budgets, etc.) in an accurate and timely fashion.

Agency & Vendor Management

  •  Learn the intricacies related to national/regional PR agencies and assist in the development of communications strategy and PR programs to support ownership areas with agencies.
  • Manages relationship with multicultural PR agency as part of an integrated agency team process in the development of leadership communications strategy & PR programs to support ownership areas.
  • Monitors quality of work and provides ongoing feedback and counsel in ownership areas to agency partners to help them meet objectives, deliver the best work.
  • Monitors and guides agency spend against established budgets to ensure effective resource management.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

  • Must be fully vaccinated (i.e., at least 2 weeks after last dose) for COVID-19  and, if hired, present proof of vaccination by start date
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 5+ years of experience working in PR,  Marketing or Digital/Social, including  multicultural communications

Preferred Qualifications

·       BA/BS degree in Communications, Public Relations, or other field

·       Bi-lingual abilities are a plus

·       At least three years of experience managing people

·       Results-oriented with proven experience in leading teams

·       Strong networking, relationship-building and interpersonal skills 

·       Experience partnering with and influencing others 

·       High level of strategic focus, planning, perspective

·       Excellent writing, design and presentation skills

·       Strong attention to detail, self-starter and great teammate

·       Creative thinker with strong strategic mindset

·       You should enjoy working in a fast-paced environment

·       Demonstrated with traditional print and broadcast media

·       Experience utilizing social media

·       Experience managing public relations agencies

·       Experience and expertise in multicultural public relations

·       Familiarity with traditional and social media monitoring tools
