Communications Manager, Justice and Advocacy

Salary Range: $65,559.00 To 76,677.60 Annually
The Communications Manager for Advocacy will be an integral part of the GLIDE Foundation’s communications team, working to engage and educate the public on GLIDE social justice and advocacy initiatives and will play an integral role in content creation, curation and strategically highlighting the policy advocacy, coalition partnership participation and community engagement and activism work of GLIDE’s Center for Social Justice (CSJ) and the GLIDE Foundation’s social services and outreach. 

The Communications Manager for Advocacy will work closely with the Senior Director of Strategic Communications and the Senior Director, Center for Social Justice to amplify GLIDE’s leadership voice on racial and social justice issues, position GLIDE as a rigorous impact organization and advance GLIDE's strategic and fundraising goals, The Communications Manager will also leverage GLIDE’s legacy and voice to strengthen relationships and cultivate advocacy efforts with coalition partners, and GLIDE stakeholders, including clients, donors, volunteers, and community partners. 
The individual who will thrive in this position has a strong interest in and understanding of racial and social justice issues. This individual is a creative, driven professional committed to advancing social justice and truly embodies GLIDE's mission and values. This person must work non-traditional hours (nights, weekends, and holidays) and be present at GLIDE-focused advocacy, community engagement and fundraising events. Regular and predictable attendance is essential.
  • Edits, writes, produces, and curates a variety of content, including articles, profiles, news releases, social posts, and other content, including video and audio segments and podcasts.
  • Responsible for various advocacy writing pieces, including leadership commentaries, blog posts, op-eds, and content for newsletters and email blasts.
  • Ability to collaborate and successfully edit others' work, ensure editorial quality, and maintain an editorial calendar.
  • Enhances existing and grows new relationships with the media, relevant external stakeholders, and the general public.
  • Ensures GLIDE's brand and strategic messages are represented consistently in digital and print communications.
  • Manages the updates of print and online communications collateral to support GLIDE's various programs and initiatives. 
  • Works with freelancers, vendors, and partners to produce effective and compelling communications collateral.
  • Responsible for communications-related budget expenditures, processing all vouchers and expense reports.
  • Collaborates with Communications team members and public relations consultant/s to generate story and press ideas.
  • Strong interest in and understanding of racial and social justice issues.  
  • Excellent interpersonal communications and leadership skills, with the ability to work well in a team and build relationships with people from a diversity of backgrounds.
  • Works well under pressure in a demanding, fast-paced, and unpredictable work environment—the ability to operate with purpose, urgency, and accuracy.
  • Has a range of ability and willingness to act as a strategic contributor to tactical implementer in an agency with limited support infrastructure.

  • BA Communications or related field and 4+ years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of communications and marketing experience in non-profit, advocacy, or political space required.
  • Experience in a policy advocacy or campaign settings and possesses an understanding of the role of communications in achieving policy changes and political wins.
  • Experience developing and implementing an organizational communications strategy.
  • Experience in all aspects of developing a three-year Communications Strategy that aligns with strategic objectives.
  • Experience with creative concept development, art direction, storyboarding, and message development for creative design work.
  • Experience working in an organization funded primarily by philanthropy and relationship-based contractual agreements.
  • Social networking knowledge and experience.
  • Experience working in a community-based social service agency with the targeted population (homeless, people with addiction, and mental health problems) helpful.
  • Advanced communication skills. Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of oral, written, visual, and audial communications to determine the most effective proposals and presentation materials, to persuade others to accept suggestions and recommendations, and to foster effective relationships between funding sources and GLIDE.
  • Is skilled at finding the most effective way to get messages across in print and electronic media using various methods.
  • Skilled in writing for various audiences and in different writing styles on a wide range of topics. Must be able to compose clear, concise, and original materials. Editing and proofreading skills essential.
  • Able to devise and implement a complex budget.
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office suite. Facility with Excel.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media.
