Marketing Associate or Marketing Manager, SciLine

Regular Full time

We have an exciting full-time, remote-eligible opportunity for a Marketing Associate or Marketing Manager to join SciLine. This position will report to the Deputy Director for News and Operations and work collaboratively with others on the SciLine team to implement a wide range of marketing activities. 

SciLine is a free service that connects journalists to scientist-sources and science-based information for news stories. Marketing efforts are aimed at keeping journalists and scientists apprised of SciLine’s services and upcoming events; introducing SciLine to journalists not already using these services; and attracting participation from more scientists. Responsibilities will include: drafting promotional copy; posting content to SciLine’s social media channels; sending email campaigns to target audiences; arranging external promotions; maintaining SciLine’s marketing budget and tracking expenses; calculating and reporting on the ROI of marketing activities; and maintaining a marketing and events calendar for SciLine. The Marketing Associate will also be involved in outreach including virtual and in-person presentations to prospective users of SciLine’s services.

For candidates with more advanced marketing experience, SciLine is open to hiring this position at the Marketing Manager level. The Marketing Managerc role would additionally include: rationalizing, designing, and piloting new, creative marketing approaches for SciLine; developing a stakeholder engagement strategy; and building actionable relationships with prospective partner organizations.

What You'll Do

  • Work with leadership to create and implement a marketing strategy for SciLine aimed at building brand awarenss and facilitating growth in demand across SciLine’s full spectrum of free services, which already engage thousands of U.S. journalists and North-America-based scientists.
  • Track and execute SciLine’s marketing budget, including day-to-day decisions about paid ads.
  • Help plan and participate in remote and in-person meetings with potential users of SciLine’s services, including outreach to Spanish-langauge media outlets and other organizations that represent or engage underserved communities—an important and growing focus for SciLine.
  • Serve as primary tactical implementer of SciLine’s marketing activities, including planning, drafting for review, and publishing: bulk-emails, paid and organic social media posts, digital ads, third-party promotions, and content for brand collateral.
  • Maintain a marketing calendar that coordinates promotional campaigns across SciLine’s digital channels (e.g., Google Ads, Reddit, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, the SciLine website).
  • Liaise with external advertising partners.
  • Research, track, and present marketing prospects, including promotional opportunities tied to scientific or journalistic conferences, live events, and virtual or social-media-based groups. 
  • Track and report on KPIs and the ROI of SciLine’s marketing activities using digital analytics tools.

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Minimum two years experience in marketing;
  • Experience executing paid ads on social media;
  • Experience with direct email marketing, familiarity with Mailchimp a plus;
  • Experience tracking digital analytics data;
  • Proficiency with MS Excel;
  • Excellent written communication skills, including an eye for precision and clean copy;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to present to stakeholders;
  • Enthusiasm about SciLine’s mission priorities, including our strong focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and the importance of local journalism in underserved communities;
  • Ability to work independently, but appreciative of collaborative inputs;
  • Interest in the cultures and professional practices of journalism and/or academic science;
  • Undaunted and even excited by the challenge of juggling and meeting multiple tight deadlines;
  • Proficiency with Spanish language not required, but a plus.

Location

The SciLine team operates remotely, but SciLine also has available space in AAAS’s Washington, DC, headquarters for staff members who prefer to work in an office environment. We are able to hire remote workers in select states. If you are not located in or able to relocate to a state where AAAS has a business presence, you may not be eligible for this position. The anticipated salary for this position is $70,000 – $95,000 per year. AAAS currently provides the following benefits for this position: paid vacation leave, paid sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, flexible spending account, dental insurance, life insurance, vision insurance, retirement benefits, short- and long-term disability, each subject to the terms of the applicable program. Additional benefits may apply.
