Position Summary
The Marketing Brand Manager (Communication Manager I) is responsible for managing the strategic marketing initiatives and brand oversight for the department of Residence Education and Housing Services (REHS). The Marketing Brand Manager will serve as a liaison with Residential and Hospitality Services (RHS) Creative Services, as well as internal and external partners, to promote Residence Education and Housing Services and its public-facing brands, as well as Residential and Hospitality Services.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

  • Champions and maintains oversight of the REHS, Live On, MSU Tours, MSU Union and University Conference Services brands. Also ensures that university and Residential and Hospitality Services brand standards are adhered.  
  • Services as primary liaison for REHS with RHS Creative Services to conceptualize, develop, produce and distribute communications and marketing materials. 
  • Assists with the development and implementation of the annual communications and marketing strategic plan for REHS Conceptualizes and proposes innovative, audience-specific, integrated marketing strategies, including: campaign development, social media engagement, program implementation, budgets and timelines. 
  • Provides comprehensive marketing consulting services to operating units within REHS. This includes managing projects throughout the production process to ensure completion in a timely manner and within budget.  Works with operating units to ensure consistency across all mediums and that brand messages are incorporated into all marketing and communications materials. 
  • Produces copy for print and digital marketing and communications materials for REHS communications platforms.
  • Conducts market research and reviews assessment of campaigns to help guide sound business and marketing decisions that support student success and diversity and inclusion. Makes recommendations to the Associate Director for Communications for REHS based on research.
  • Plans events to advance the department’s brands. 
  • Supervises and/or engages with student staff, including: Live On Campus Crew and Marketing Interns. 
  • Coordinates and approves the work of artists, videographers, photographers, and printers and monitors work in progress. Works with vendors, and operational units, to order and approve branded promotional items and giveaways for REHS.  
  • Tracks communications and marketing expenses for REHS to ensure budget is adhered to. 
  • Maintains and updates files including communication and marketing materials, statistical reports, clippings and measurement.  
  • Keeps abreast of developments in production resources, pricing, technology and industry trends in higher education and marketing. 
  • Negotiates rates and orders advertising for print, television, radio, and digital platforms. 

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications
Three to five years progressively more responsible or expansive work in marketing communications/public relations or related field; demonstrated success in building effective communications and marketing programs to both internal and external audiences; proven knowledge of Associated Press style guide; skilled in using Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Teams and other messaging/content management tools; experience in digital and web multimedia projects; successful development and creation of social media to reach specific goals; strong independent thinking and leadership skills; ability to work effectively on a diverse team with different communication styles; energy, enthusiasm and creativity.
