Senior Communications Associate, National Equity Atlas (Oakland, CA)

Position Overview

Putting the power of reliable, accurate, and deeply disaggregated data into the hands of movement leaders and policymakers is a key strategy that PolicyLink is using to win on equity and achieve transformative policy changes that improve the lives of the 100 million people in America living in or near poverty. Through a research partnership with the University of Southern California Equity Research Institute (ERI) led by Dr. Manuel Pastor, we produce the National Equity Atlas: America’s most detailed report card on racial and economic equity and a first-of-its-kind data and policy tool to design high-impact equity solutions. National Equity Atlas products and research inform policy campaigns led by PolicyLink and our allies, elevate equity issues in the policy debate, and equip local leaders with relevant data and policy solutions.

 

PolicyLink is seeking a Senior Communications Associate to lead communications, outreach, and dissemination for the National Equity Atlas research partnership. The Senior Communications Associate will be responsible for designing and executing a communications strategy that increases the visibility and reach of the Atlas in the media and with advocates and policymakers, expands the use of our data tools for policy change and advocacy, and builds our network of Atlas users and partners. The communications strategy will include traditional and social media, dissemination, outreach, and training activities. Reporting to the Vice President of Communications at PolicyLink, the Senior Communications Associate will serve as a key liaison between the two organizations, serving as a member of the communications teams at both PolicyLink and ERI to implement a coordinated and comprehensive communications strategy.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Design and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for the Atlas partnership that maximizes the communications reach and assets of both PolicyLink and the USC Equity Research Institute.
  • Serve as the media liaison for the Atlas partnership; design media strategy; write press releases and pitch media stories to journalists; oversee the work of media consultants as needed.
  • Design and co-design release strategies for Atlas reports and analyses, often with community-based partners.
  • Design and execute a social media strategy.
  • Produce monthly email updates for the National Equity Atlas and Bay Area Equity Atlas.
  • Track and measure a series of metrics to inform strategy and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure the National Equity Atlas and Bay Area Equity Atlas websites are continually maintained and updated with the latest content.
  • Create and maintain marketing materials and social media assets.
  • Implement user engagement and outreach strategies.
  • Produce webinars and other events sharing Atlas content.

 

Qualifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Passionate about the work of the National Equity Atlas team and our mission of advancing racial and economic equity and inclusive prosperity.
  • Experience developing communications strategies for mission-oriented organizations.
  • Experience developing and monitoring/evaluating social media strategies/campaigns and managing organizational social media platforms, including Twitter.
  • A positive, solutions-oriented attitude, and an ability to be flexible and work under pressure.
  • Self-starter with excellent time management skills and ability to effectively work on multiple projects.
  • Experience with community organizing and policy advocacy and working with low-income communities of color.

 

Compensation

 

  • The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $130,000, dependent upon experience.
